On 6 March, the lifting industry marks the 80th birthday of Piet Otto, founder of Phakamisa Safety Consultants and a long-standing member and former EXCO member of the Lifting Equipment Engineers Association of SA (LEEASA).

This milestone is not only a personal celebration, but a moment to recognise a professional legacy that has significantly shaped lifting machinery inspection standards, technical competency development, and regulatory compliance within South Africa’s lifting environment.

Five Decades of Technical Discipline and Regulatory Commitment

With more than fifty years of experience in the lifting equipment sector, Piet Otto has established a reputation built on technical exactitude, disciplined interpretation of legislation, and uncompromising ethical practice. As a registered Lifting Machinery Inspector (LMI), he has consistently demonstrated the importance of methodical inspection protocols, defensible reporting practices, and strict adherence to statutory requirements.

His professional influence extends beyond field inspection work. Through participation in industry forums and technical committees, he has helped strengthen quality assurance processes, reinforce accountability within the inspection fraternity, and advance the professional standing of lifting machinery inspectors in South Africa.

Since founding Phakamisa Safety Consultants in 1999, Piet has delivered specialised training and advisory services focused on:

• Lifting tackle and lifting machinery inspection

• Practical application of statutory requirements

• Rigging principles and safe load management

• Compliance auditing and risk mitigation strategies

Through structured training methodologies and practical case-based instruction, he has equipped employers, engineers, inspectors and lifting practitioners with the technical competence required to align operational activities with South Africa’s lifting regulations and applicable standards.

Strengthening Industry Governance Through LEEASA

Piet Otto’s contribution to LEEASA has been both strategic and structural.

As a long-standing member and former EXCO, he played an active role in advancing the association’s mandate to professionalise the lifting machinery inspection sector.

During his tenure, emphasis was placed on:

• Upholding rigorous competency standards for LMIs

• Promoting ethical conduct and professional accountability

• Supporting continuous technical development within the industry

• Enhancing alignment between inspection practice and evolving regulatory requirements

His involvement was not symbolic; it was operational. He supported initiatives to strengthen member oversight, improve technical discourse within the association, and ensure LEEASA maintained its position as a credible industry authority.

His contribution reinforced LEEASA’s role as a structured professional body committed to safety, compliance, and technical integrity. During his tenure as Vice-Chair of LEEASA in 2015, a pivotal conversation took place. When the concept of Lifting Africa was first developed, I approached Piet to obtain his professional assessment of whether the sector required a dedicated, technically focused publication — and whether such a platform could serve as an official communication vehicle aligned with LEEASA.

He immediately recognised the strategic importance of structured industry communication. He understood that technical standards, regulatory interpretation, and professional development require an informed, credible platform for sharing knowledge responsibly.

His support was decisive. It provided not only encouragement, but validation grounded in experience and industry insight. That endorsement directly helped establish Lifting Africa as a publication aligned with the needs of the lifting community and supportive of LEEASA’s objectives.

His confidence in the concept played a material role in transforming an idea into a recognised industry platform.

A Legacy That Extends Beyond a Milestone

Reaching 80 years is a significant achievement. In Piet Otto’s case, it represents more than longevity; it reflects sustained professional contributions.

His legacy is evident in:

• Improved inspection competence across the sector

• Strengthened training standards

• Greater regulatory awareness

• A generation of lifting professionals who have benefited from his mentorship and technical guidance

The impact of his work is embedded in the systems, standards and practices that con-tinue to shape South Africa’s lifting industry today. As we mark this milestone, we acknowledge a career defined by discipline, integrity and measurable industry contribution. May this 80th year stand as a testament to the influence you have had on the lifting sector and to the standards you have helped entrench.
