From Training To Habit: Kwick Access Rentals’ Digital Approach To Safety Culture

Kwick Access Rentals (Pty) Ltd is a South African access equipment rental company specialising in Mobile Elevating Work Platforms (MEWPs) and height-safety solutions.

Launched in late 2025 and continuing as an active weekly programme throughout 2026, Smart Start Monday is a digital safety awareness initiative designed to bridge the gap between formal operator training and the everyday behaviours that prevent workplace incidents. It forms a core part of Kwick Access Rentals’ long-term safety culture strategy.

Safety Practices

Smart Start Monday was developed in response to a well-documented challenge in the working-at-height sector: operators complete accredited training but incidents continue to occur due to routine behavioural failures — complacency, post-weekend distraction, skipped pre-use inspections, and diminished situational awareness. Rather than functioning as a standalone safety programme, Smart Start Monday operates as a structured behavioural reinforcement layer that sits above and alongside existing safety protocols.

Every episode targets a single, specific safework topic — including pre-use inspections, environmental hazard recognition, emergency preparedness, safe operating techniques, and human factors such as fatigue and complacency — aligning directly with the requirements of DMR18 and the broader MEWP safety framework. By embedding safety messaging into the start of every working week, the initiative actively reduces the risk of complacency developing between formal training cycles. This positions Smart Start Monday as a leading-indicator tool: one that builds the behavioural foundations that prevent incidents, rather than responding to them after they occur.

Training Programs

Each Smart Start Monday episode is a professionally produced 30–60 second microlearning video, scripted and structured to deliver one clear, actionable safety takeaway per episode.

The content library spans the full scope of MEWP safety, covering pre-use inspection procedures, operational risk awareness, environmental considerations, and human performance factors. Content is developed using a storytelling methodology rather than procedural instruction — explaining why a safe behaviour matters through relatable workplace scenarios, making concepts more memorable and transferable to real job-site conditions. A significant milestone in the programme’s development is its formal accreditation by SAIOSH (South African Institute of Occupational Safety and Health). Smart Start Monday is now recognised to award SAIOSH members one Continuing Professional Development (CPD) point per episode watched.

This accreditation formally positions the initiative not merely as safety content, but as recognised structured learning within the occupational health and safety profession — an industry first for a content-based digital awareness series of this kind. Since its late 2025 launch, the programme has continued to evolve through a structured content calendar, incorporating seasonal hazards, emerging industry risks, and audience feedback to ensure ongoing relevance and effectiveness throughout 2026 and beyond.

Employee Engagement & Competence

Smart Start Monday reaches both Kwick Access Rentals’ internal team and the broader industry through multi-platform digital distribution, ensuring consistent safety messaging regardless of an operator’s location or worksite. Viewer feedback from employees and customers indicates that the short-format, character-driven approach makes safety content more accessible and easier to retain than traditional formats.

Viwe Mbovane — Truck Driver / Operator

“I did my MEWP training through the Institute for Work at Height. They taught me a lot. But when you are working every day, you can forget things. Smart Start Monday helps me remember. Every Monday I watch the video before I start my day. It is short so it is easy to watch. It talks about the same things I learned in my training, like checking the machine before you use it and being careful on site. It makes sense to me because I already know the work. It keeps me thinking about safety even when I am busy. I think it is good for all operators.”

Kabelo Lebelo — Hire Desk Manager

“One of the things I’ve noticed since Smart Start Monday started is that customers actually bring it up themselves. I’ll be processing a hire and a client will mention they watched the Monday video that week — sometimes they’ll ask a question about something it covered, like a pre-use inspection step or a specific hazard. It’s opened up better conversations about safety before equipment even leaves our yard. On the hire desk, we’re often the first point of contact for customers, and it helps knowing that they’re already getting consistent safety information from us on a weekly basis. It’s not just about renting equipment anymore — customers can see that we genuinely care about how it gets used.”

Innovative Approaches

Smart Start Monday introduces several meaningful innovations to safety education in the lifting and access equipment industry: Character-Based Learning: Stefi the Giraffe — Kwick Access Rentals’ height-safety mascot — serves as a consistent, recognisable safety ambassador throughout every episode. This character-driven approach increases viewer recall and creates a trusted, approachable voice for technical safety topics. Microlearning Format: Each episode delivers one focused safety lesson in under 60 seconds, removing the friction of longer training formats and enabling consumption without disrupting the workday. This is particularly impactful in fieldbased environments where time and attention are limited.

Digital-First, Industry-Wide Distribution: By publishing content across digital platforms rather than limiting delivery to internal toolbox talks, Kwick Access Rentals extends its safety influence to customers, contractors, and the wider MEWP community — democratising access to consistent, professional safety education. Storytelling Over Instruction: Episodes explain the reasoning behind safe practices using real-world workplace scenarios rather than reciting procedures, significantly improving the likelihood that viewers internalise and apply the lesson onsite.

SAIOSH CPD Accreditation: The formal recognition of each episode as a qualifying CPD unit incentivises safety professionals to engage with the content regularly and integrates Smart Start Monday into the continuing professional development ecosystem — an approach not previously seen in digital content-based safety initiatives in South Africa.

Industry Partnership — Institute for Work at Height (IWH): Smart Start Monday operates in formal collaboration with the Institute for Work at Height, which co-distributes episodes and actively promotes the content to its membership base. This partnership elevates the initiative beyond a single company’s safety programme into a recognised industry resource.

Extending consistent, accredited safety messaging to a wider professional audience and reinforcing Kwick Access Rentals’ position as a trusted safety voice across the working-at-height sector.

Impact & Results

Launched in late 2025 and continuing as a weekly programme into 2026, Smart Start Monday has rapidly established itself as a recognised safety touchpoint — both internally at Kwick Access Rentals and within the broader working-atheight community.

Its consistent delivery week-on-week demonstrates this is not a once-off campaign but a sustained, long-term commitment to safety culture development. Beyond metrics, the initiative has repositioned Kwick Access Rentals as an active safety advocate and thought leader within the MEWP sector.

Through its collaboration with the Institute for Work at Height, Smart Start Monday reaches IWH’s broader member community.

Extending the programme’s safety impact well beyond Kwick Access Rentals’ own customer base and into the wider working-at-height profession.

The SAIOSH CPD accreditation provides measurable professional value to every episode watched, creating a direct link between content engagement and recognised occupational safety competence development.
