The women behind the scenes, the unsung heroes of the industry

More and more women are succeeding in technical careers, creating major shifts for their individual development as well as for an entire industry of women.
Through their achievements these women demonstrate expertise while breaking barriers to lead innovative projects which drive progress and create new standards. Their achievements highlight that gender barriers do not hinder success in industries that were once believed to be male-only domains.
However, if we look beyond technical roles, numerous women actively dedicate themselves to administrative work behind the scenes. These unsung heroes maintain the essential operational structure of organizations despite often receiving little recognition. They are responsible for maintaining a strong operational foundation, enabling technical teams and leadership to focus on their core responsibilities.
The term ‘cogs in the wheel’ fails to express the essential role women fulfil in organizations through administrative positions. Complex operations succeed because of their essential contributions, and they excel at both task execution and maintaining a well functioning system.
As an example, at Alpha Load Testing (ALTS), a Lifting Machine Entity (LME), we have six women that all work together with exceptional teamwork under high pressure conditions. They share knowledge and help each other to tackle the daily challenges of their work responsibilities and everyday obstacles. They perform various administrative and operational functions to deliver precise planning and certification and invoicing services.
These phenomenal ladies ensure Lifting Machine Inspectors (LMIs) and other technical support staff receive current technical information and legislative updates which include South African National Standards (SANS) documents. This approach also enables efficient and precise performance of paperwork and problem-solving together with planning and invoicing.
They possess in-depth knowledge of modern regulations, and they establish an essential operational foundation for the entire organization – a crucial component for the health and safety industry. Load Test certificates are issued timeously, and they deliver essential support to clients which completes the operational cycle. We, at ALT, salute these women as they bring significant value to the industry.
Women in administrative and operational roles perform vital, often unseen work, exhibiting remarkable resilience, expert skills, and unwavering determination. This Women’s Month, we should honour their dedication in maintaining industry operations behind the scenes, ensuring everything runs smoothly and steadily.
