John Keenan Bowman: From Crane Salesman To Industry Pioneer
For more than five decades, John Keenan Bowman has helped shape South Africa’s truck-mounted lifting industry - not only through the cranes he has sold and the businesses he has built, but through the products he introduced, the applications he helped develop, the customers he advised and the people he mentored. His career began in the early 1970s selling HIAB cranes for 600 SA. More than fifty years later, at 75, he remains actively involved in the industry, meeting customers, developing solutions and sharing the knowledge accumulated over a lifetime.

Impactful Contributions - Industry Influence and Legacy
John’s contribution is perhaps best demonstrated by how many lifting concepts he helped establish in Southern Africa. After progressing from crane salesman to Sales Manager at Chalmar Industries, where he sold Pesci cranes, he became a business owner in the 1980s. Pesci SA subsequently became Bowman Cranes, which grew into one of South Africa’s leading truck-mounted crane businesses before being sold in 2007. Throughout this journey John continually looked internationally for products that could solve specific South African operating challenges.
These included Bonfiglioli cranes; Kennis Rolling Platform Cranes, then a new concept for the South African market; HIAB HANA cranes manufactured in Korea; Italimec platforms; and the Atlas long-boom brick crane. One of his most significant contributions came through the brick industry. Rather than simply supplying a standard HIAB crane, John helped develop a solution tailored to South African brick-handling requirements. Hundreds of these cranes were subsequently sold, and the concept remains part of the market today. His legacy therefore lies not simply in sales volume, but in identifying applications, adapting equipment to local requirements and establishing lifting solutions that endured long after their introduction.
Leadership and Vision
John’s leadership has rarely depended upon title. His influence has come through knowledge, judgement and example. After selling Bowman Cranes, he could reasonably have retired. Instead, following the expiry of his restraint of trade, a long-standing Italian manufacturing partner asked him to represent them again in South Africa. That relationship helped establish Bowman Africa and began another chapter of his career.
His philosophy has consistently been that the crane must fit the customer’s application, rather than the customer being persuaded to buy whichever crane happens to be available. Testimonial evidence describes how he taught salespeople to ask questions others had not asked and to understand the customer’s complete requirement before selecting equipment. That philosophy has influenced generations of salespeople, customers and business owners.
Innovation and Excellence
John has never viewed a crane as an isolated product. His approach considers the crane, truck, body, subframe, application and customer’s operating requirements as one complete solution. This mindset drove his introduction of new crane brands and applications and his willingness to search internationally for better solutions. It also defines his standard of service.
He has remained personally involved in specifications, installations and customer relationships and, when problems arise, believes they must be confronted rather than avoided. One long-standing business associate describes a lesson learned from John: problems do not solve themselves. The response is to return to the customer, resolve the problem and rebuild trust.

Commitment to Safety, Standards, Compliance and Ethics
John’s approach to safety begins with correct application and specification. A crane must be suitable for the work it is expected to perform, correctly integrated with the vehicle and responsibly delivered to the customer. His professional ethics are equally consistent.
He teaches people never to guess or misrepresent information: if you do not know the answer, tell the customer and return with the correct information. This principle appears among the sales fundamentals still followed by a former mentee after more than 35 years in the industry.
A recent testimonial gives a practical example. John refused to proceed with a customer’s truck-and-crane build until the customer had inspected and confirmed the proposed configuration, despite pressure to continue. His concern was that the work be done correctly and that both customer and supplier were protected.
Professional Development and Mentorship
Perhaps John’s most extraordinary legacy is the people he leaves behind. Employees, customers, suppliers and even future competitors have learned from him. His mentorship was practical: listen more than you speak; know your product; return every call; follow up every quotation; confront problems early; understand your territory; and above all, remember that “people buy from people.”
Robbie Weir, now a HIAB Sales Executive in Scotland, directly credits John with giving him the tools, skills and confidence that helped shape his career. Radie Pretorius says John’s lessons on hard work, integrity and perseverance still influence how he works in New Zealand after 24 years of association with Bowman Africa. This is mentorship with measurable longevity: John’s lessons are now being practised internationally and passed to another generation.
Recognition and Industry Respect
John’s recognition is perhaps most powerfully demonstrated not by trophies, but by the breadth of people prepared to endorse him: customers, employees, former employees, suppliers, international manufacturers, professional advisers and competitors. At an international commercial vehicle exhibition in Germany, a senior executive from a competing manufacturer greeted him simply as “Mr Truck Crane South Africa.”
It was not an official title, but it captured a reputation earned through decades of knowledge, professionalism, integrity and relationships across the global lifting industry.
Sustained Impact
More than fifty years after entering the industry, John still goes to work, meets customers, pursues opportunities and mentors those around him. The businesses he has built are part of his achievement. The cranes he introduced are part of it. But his deeper legacy can be seen in the businesses he helped customers build and the careers he helped create.
Anthony Hearn, owner of AWH Rigging & Plant Rentals in Namibia, describes John as both mentor and father figure in the crane business and credits John’s vision and inspiration with helping his company acquire the biggest crane truck in Southern Africa - an achievement that, in his words, “put AWH Rigging & Plant Rentals on the map.”
Across the testimonials, a consistent picture emerges: a man respected by customers, suppliers, employees and competitors; a salesman who became a business builder; a business owner who became a mentor; and an industry veteran whose influence continues through the people and solutions he helped develop. John Bowman has not merely spent a lifetime in the Southern African lifting industry. He has spent a lifetime helping to build it.
